Why Snap-On Overdentures are a Major Step Up from Loose Dentures

Why Snap-On Overdentures are a Major Step Up from Loose Dentures

Many patients who wear traditional full dentures struggle with a common problem: the dentures shift. Traditional dentures rest on top of soft gum tissue, which naturally changes shape over time. This lack of a solid anchor often leads to slipping, sore spots, and difficulty eating favorite foods.

The Upgrade: What is an Implant-Supported Overdenture?

An implant-supported overdenture (often called a snap-on denture) solves this stability issue by connecting directly to dental implants (usually 2 to 4 per jaw). We place specialized snap attachments (like the LOCATOR® system) onto the implants, which lock into corresponding housings inside your denture.

This simple mechanical connection dramatically improves how your dentures function:

  • Direct Chewing Support: Chewing forces are redirected through the implants into your jawbone, protecting your soft gums from friction and pain.
  • More Natural Design (Upper Arch): Because the implants hold the denture secure, we can often remove the bulky pink plate covering the roof of your mouth, allowing you to taste your food and speak normally.
  • Stability: The denture snaps firmly in place, so it will not slip when you talk, laugh, or chew.

What Clinical Studies Show

A systematic study published in the Journal of Dentistry gathered clinical data comparing traditional dentures with implant-supported overdentures.

The research showed that implant-supported overdentures increased chewing force by over 100% compared to traditional dentures. Chewing efficiency—the ability to break down harder foods like meat and raw vegetables—was significantly higher, leading to better nutrition, easier digestion, and higher quality of life scores.
