What Happens to the Jawbone After You Lose a Tooth?

Your teeth are anchored in your jawbone, and every time you chew, the roots of your teeth transfer those forces down into the bone. This constant stimulation tells your body to keep sending minerals and nutrients to keep that bone strong.

When you lose a tooth, that local stimulation stops. Because the body is highly efficient, it starts absorbing the unused bone minerals to use them elsewhere. Clinical studies show that you can lose up to 25% of your jawbone width and height in just the first year following a tooth extraction.

A Note on Traditional Dentures: While standard dentures are a great way to replace missing teeth visually, they only rest on top of your gums. They do not stimulate the underlying bone. Over time, the constant rubbing and pressure from a moving denture can actually cause the bone to recede faster.
